Jay Sean
Jay Sean is a 22 year old British-born Asian from Hounslow who left medical school in summer 2003 to pursue a music career. Growing up, Jay listened to a diverse range of artists from traditional Bollywood artists to R&B singers like Donnell Jones, Eric Benet, Boyz II Men and Musiq Soulchild.
Jay also developed a intense passion for hip hop, becoming more and more inspired by the lyrical skills of Notorious BIG, Fu-Shnickens (who he studied for a ‘fast rap’ technique), Treach from Naughty by Nature, Grand Puba and Mobb Deep, to name a few.
At 15, Jay became one half of hip-hop duo ‘Compulsive Disorder’, developing his double time rap skills while also working hard on his writing style. In his bedroom he began to amass cupboards full of A5 notepads full of lyrics and song compositions. His distinctive ‘British Wit’ paints an amusing picture of his life experiences so far.
Around Christmas 2002, Jay’s demo made it’s way to Rishi Rich’s studio and within days he was signed to 2Point9 and plans were made immediately to launch him to the world.
Rishi decided to include Jay in his debut Rishi Rich Project record – a project aimed to showcase up-and coming talent. Jay was signed to Relentless Records/Virgin Records in July 2003, the label responsible for hits such as Artful Dodger/Craig David – Rewind, Daniel Beddingfield – You gotta get thru this and Master of Ceremonies – Do you really like this. The critically acclaimed debut single “Dance with you (nachna tere naal)” featuring Juggy D reached number 12 in the UK charts in September 2003 and paved the way for Jay’s solo project released in early 2004.

M.I.A.
Maya Arulpragasam spent the early years of her life in a number of places. She moved from London, England, to her parents' native Sri Lanka at the age of six months, only to relocate to Madras, India. During a return stay in Sri Lanka, the civil war taking place within the country escalated to the point where Arulpragasam began to lose family members and friends. She didn't see her father -- a devout and active separatist as part of the Tamil rebellion, which has clashed with the Sinhalese majority -- often throughout these years, but her life stabilized once she and the rest of her family were able to make it back to London.
As a student, Arulpragasam became involved in the arts and published a monogram book of her paintings -- titled M.I.A. and heavily influenced by the Tamil rebellion. She later connected with Elastica, providing the photography and graphics for the group's second album, and she shot footage during their American tour. Elastica's support act, Peaches, introduced her to the Roland MC-505, a sequencer she became familiar with after returning home. Steve Mackey (Pulp) and Ross Orton became involved after hearing a demo; they made adjustments to "Galang," a song that was then pressed into 500 copies and released, under the name M.I.A., by the Showbiz label. It didn't take long for the song -- a bold, righteous amalgamation of hip-hop, electro, dancehall, grime, and baile funk -- to make an impact with DJs. She wound up signing a contract with XL, which re-released the single and, eventually, debut album Arular in 2005. Anticipation for the release was considerable, only heightened by the Piracy Funds Terrorism mixtape she put together with DJ Diplo. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Veronica
Born in West London into an Asian family, Veronica discovered her voice at an early age and nurtured her musical passion by writing her own songs and performing. She hooked up with a production team to record a single and before long she was supporting the likes of Omar and Apache Indian.
Around this time, Harrow based producer Rishi Rich, was looking for a female vocalist to collaborate with. He invited Veronica to team up with him and they formed VR1, an outfit considered by many as being a major influence in Asian music culture. Recording over 5 albums, VR1 sold over 250 000 units worldwide, performed at various gigs supporting artists such as Foxy Brown and Hinda Hicks. In 1997 Veronica picked up two awards for best female singer at the Asian Pop Media Awards and Movie Awards.
Veronica's debut single 'Show me love', was serviced to the clubs in 2001 and quickly made a significant dent on the urban underground. As well as reaching pole position in almost every urban chart, it was also critically acclaimed everywhere from Smash Hits to Blues and Soul, who enthused that it was "A welcome respite from- and riposte to – the rut that US R 'n' B is currently digging for itself, and the best R 'n' B record ever made by anyone of Asian origin."The single 'Girls Gotta Have Fun' was released on August 6th 2001 on limited release. The video was shot in glamorous Las Vegas and received high rotation on numerous music channels and TV stations. Veronica has made appearances on mainstream TV such as, MTV 'The Lick', Kiss TV, Pop World, BBC 2 'Asian life' (documentary), Channel 5, Cable TV 'Where it's at', B4U, Sony TV, Channel East, Zee TV, Network East (BBC 2) and Fuji TV (Japan). During this time Veronica has also been the cover girl for the glossy magazine Snoop and has received press coverage from magazines to newspapers such as Smash Hits, Hip Hop Connection, India Times, Just 17, Asian woman, Eastern Eye, Hello mag to mention a few.
Veronica has also found time to write for other artists such as, Misteeq 'Roll On' charted at number 7 (UK national charts), Harvey from So Solid Crew, Abs, Ayesha, Jay Sean and Devoted. Appeared as the guest vocalist on the Ultimate Kaos remix single, 'Baby We're Dancing', featured and written on the Danny K remix 'Hurt So Bad', performed backing vocals on the De Nada 'Loving You Anyway' remix, performed 'No Other Guy' on Rishi Rich's debut album ‘Simply Rich’, and also featured on Turkish single ‘Yana Yana’by Hakan.

Asian Dub Foundation
Asian Dub Foundation formed in 1993 as an outgrowth of the documentary Identical Beat, a film shot at London's Farringdon Community Music House, the site of a series of summer workshops designed to teach Asian children the essentials of music technology. In charge of the workshops were tutor Aniruddha Das and youth worker John Pandit, also a noted DJ; with one of their students, a 15-year-old Bengali rapper named Deedar Zaman, they soon formed a sound system which they called the Asian Dub Foundation. After each adopted an alias -- bassist/tabla player Das became Dr. Das, Pandit became Pandit G, and Zaman became Master D -- they gradually evolved into a working band with the 1994 addition of former Higher Intelligence Agency guitarist Steve Chandra Savale, an innovative performer known for tuning his strings to one note like a sitar, turning up the distortion unit and playing his instrument with a knife, earning him the knickname "Chandrasonic." Emerging in the midst of considerable anti-Asian violence throughout Britain, the Foundation's early demos landed them a contract with Nation Records, and they recorded their debut EP Conscious in 1994.
Channeling influences ranging from punk to ambient music to Bengali folk songs, Asian Dub Foundation quickly gained a strong fanbase not only among clubgoers but also among the anti-fascist movement, who applauded the group's vocal stand against racism. After earning a reputation as stand-out live performers, the band -- which now included dancer Bubble-E and second DJ Sun-J -- won widespread acclaim for the 1995 single "Rebel Warrior." Their first full-length effort, Facts and Fictions, followed later that same year, and in 1998 Asian Dub Foundation returned with Rafi's Revenge. Community Music appeared in mid-2000. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Rishi Rich
Rishi was born and brought up in London, learning to play classical Indian instruments as a young child. A job as a runner in a recording studio followed at the age of 11, and at just 14 Rishi hooked up with a friend and signed his first record deal under the production moniker ‘2 Kool’.
At the age of 15 Rishi Rich released his 1st single ‘Bombay Jungle” followed by the smash album “Love 2 Love” which well and truly launched him into the spotlight. He went on to produce a number of albums at regular intervals over the next few years.
While working in traditional Asian music, of which influences could be heard on his first five album releases, he was keen to further develop his skills and start producing a variety of beats and sounds. Rishi wanted to find a way to incorporate his love for R&B, hip-hop, ragga and garage music into his traditional bhangra sound. With his unique musical influences, he toured all over India with high profile artists such as Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurti playing to audiences of hundreds of thousands.
Back in the UK, Rishi worked with a number of Asian artists including Jassi Sidu, Apache Indian, Taz (Stereo Nation), Bally Jagpal, B21, Veronica, Sonu Nigham, Premi, Don Dee, Mentor, Saagar Malik, PDM and Amar. He co-produced no less than 10 Asian music albums before working on his first solo album ‘Simply Rich’, which debuted at No 1 in the Asian pop charts in October 2002 and remained in the top 5 for over six months. With ‘Simply Rich’, Rishi was able to fully showcase his creative talent for fusing urban music and bhangra. The lead single from the album, “Nahin Jeena”, featured ragga MC Don D and up-and-coming vocalist Juggy D, who was later to join the 2Point9 stable.
In the meantime, Rishi had started to work with a number of cross-over artists. He produced the Top 10 hit “Roll On” for Mis Teeq and also produced their track “This is how we do it” for the Ali G Soundtrack. In addition, he wrote and produced four tracks for the Top 10 Mis Teeq album “Eye Candy”, including the title track.
He has worked with artists as diverse as Brittney Spears, Ricky Martin, Liberty X, Craig David, Mary J Blige, Westlife, Javine and UK rappers Fallacy and Estelle.
In January 2003, Rishi Rich signed to 2Point9 management and within months formed the Rishi Rich Project, whose objective was to showcase up-and-coming talent.
Through The Project, R&B singer and rapper Jay Sean was discovered and thrown into the limelight. The critically acclaimed debut Rishi Rich Project record “Dance With You (Nachna Tere Naal)” was released by Virgin Records in September 2003 and reached number 12 in the UK charts.
Rishi also produced a track for the first ever release from the Yash Raj music label, which featured in the film 'Hum Tum', earning him global recognition, as well a new international fan base.

Ravi Shankar
As the best known Indian musician, Shankar has helped expand the traditionally closed repertoire of North Indian Classical music. Under the guidance of guru Allauddin Khan, father of Ali Akbar Khan, Shankar forged a split from the more traditional styles of the equally important playing school led by Vilayat Khan. Shankar's initial innovation was a buzzier tone and flashier playing techniques that clashed with the sitar's historically more serious, solemn tone, drawing criticism from more conservative musicians. Collaborations with Western Artists such as Yehudi Menuhin and The Beatles further opened the music's boundaries, paving the way for more experimental outings by artists including Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu. Though his sound became synonymous with psychedelia in the '60s, Shankar did not enjoy the role of "trip" leader. Indeed, it takes a very clear mind and vigorous practice to reach the level of technical mastery and spiritual power that Shankar has achieved. Traditional,Instrumental
